Jorge Iván Ramírez Marín

Award Winning Colombian composer born in 1995 in Florencia, Caquetá. I grew up learning music by myself, first picking up the drumset and playing in the rock band NOVAK´S, performing in many venues and music festivals like "Florencia Rock" and "Expo-Florencia".

In 2012 I was accepted at the "Conservatorio del Tolima" for the "Bachelor in Music" program. Later, doing a concentration in Symphonic Wind Band Pedagogy and Conducting. As my skills developed, I earned multiple scholarships at the Conservatory and graduated as a top student in February 2017.

While in College, I found passion for arranging and composing and by 2014 began private composing lessons with Award-Winning Composer Adrian Camilo Ramírez. In 2015 I took private 20th century harmony lessons with renowned Conductor and Arranger Sergio Andrés Sánchez and in 2016 composing lessons with Conductor and Composer Andrés Mauricio Acosta.

Thanks to hard work, I conducted and had my arrangements performed by the Conservatorio del Tolima Symphonic Wind Band.

In 2016 I was hired by the Culture Department of Cota (Cundinamarca) to make two arrangements for Symphonic Band and Choir to be played at the II National Festival of Wind Bands and Choirs and Best Original Vocal-Instrumental Piece for Wind Band. The Municipal Wind Band of Cota won the prize for Best Original Piece in contest with the my arrangement of "Homenaje a Colombia", a piece written by Carlos Alberto Triviño.

In 2017 I received a scholarship for graduate studies for the Master´s of Music program in Composition at the University of Delaware in the United States under the guidance of the Scottish composer Dr. Jennifer Margaret Barker, a former student of Dr. George Crumb, graduating the program in 2019.

I have been in masterclasses with composers ​Robert Patterson, Ketty Netz, Bright Sheng, Mark Hagerty, David Osbon, Adam Walters, David Martynuik, Daniel Dorff, Paul Mealor, Tony Solitro, Jan Jirasek, Amanda Harberg and Ofer Ben-Amots; and workshopped his String Quintet "Fractal #1" with Calidore String Quartet. In 2018 I also took audio recording classes with Grammy Winner Producer Andreas Meyer as well as constantly working and learning recording and mixing from Engineer John Fredenburg.

In 2018 won "Call for Scores" for the Society of Composers, Inc. National Student Conference held in Bloomington, Indiana with my piece for Solo Clarinet with folk guitar accompaniment "Okaerinasai". The piece was performed at the conference with Clarinetist Luisa Maria Raigosa Posada, for whom the piece was written.

In 2019 won the Joseph Vella Award in Composition as well as a Honorable Mention in the Composition Competition at ISAM 2019 in Ochsenhausen (Germany) and won Second Place in the 2018-2019 American Prize in Composition (Student Division) as a Co-Composer of Waulking in the Glen.
